Travel Itinerary

Day 1 - Transfer to Mount Rwenzori

Your Rwenzori adventure begins in Entebbe as you meet your driver-guide and start the scenic journey towards Kasese. Travel through Uganda’s beautiful countryside, passing villages, plantations, farms, and rolling hills along the way. Enjoy stops for refreshments and lunch before continuing west. By afternoon, arrive in the Kasese area and check in at your lodge. Take the evening to relax, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and prepare your body and mind for the mountain journey ahead. This is your first step towards the Mountains of the Moon, where incredible landscapes, personal challenges, and unforgettable moments await you over the coming days.

Day 2 - Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba Camp

After breakfast, transfer to Nyakalengija, where your Rwenzori trek officially begins. Complete registration and meet your mountain guides, porters, and chef before checking your equipment. The trail starts through local farmland before entering the beautiful montane forest. Walk through tall elephant grass and thick vegetation as you gradually climb higher. Cross the Mahoma River and continue towards Nyabitaba Camp. Keep your eyes open for black-and-white colobus monkeys, colourful Rwenzori turacos, and three-horned chameleons along the way. After several hours on the trail, reach camp, enjoy dinner, and settle in for your first night high in the Mountains of the Moon.

Day 3 - Nyabitaba Camp – John Matte Camp

Wake up to fresh air and begin your trek after breakfast. Descend through the forest towards Kurt Shafer Bridge, where the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers meet. The trail then enters bamboo forest, becoming steeper, wetter, and more challenging as you climb. Moss-covered rocks, exposed roots, and slippery sections make every step part of the adventure. At Nyamileju Rock Shelter, clear weather may reward you with views of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. Continue into the giant heather zone, filled with unusual Afro-alpine plants, before crossing a demanding bog. Reach John Matte Camp and enjoy the mountain scenery surrounding your rest.

Day 4 - John Matte Camp – Bujuku Camp

After breakfast, descend towards the Bujuku River before entering the Lower Bigo Bog. Surrounded by giant lobelias, this remarkable wetland gives you a true feeling of the wild Rwenzori. Some sections have wooden walkways, but expect mud, water, and slippery ground as you continue through the Upper Bigo Bog. Follow the Bujuku River towards Lake Bujuku, taking in the changing landscape. Along the way, enjoy impressive views of Mount Baker, Mount Stanley, and Mount Speke when the weather is clear. Continue into the glacial valley and reach Bujuku Camp, where dramatic peaks create a beautiful setting for your night ahead.

Day 5 - Bujuku Camp – Elena Hut

Leave Bujuku Camp after breakfast and continue climbing through rough terrain along the western side of Lake Bujuku. Follow Groundsel Gully towards Scott Elliot Pass, taking on challenging sections as the altitude increases. A metal ladder helps you through one steep section before the trail divides. Continue towards Elena Hut, climbing over large rocks beneath Mount Stanley. The higher you go, the colder and more exposed the mountain becomes, with weather that can change quickly. Reach Elena Hut and settle in for dinner. Prepare your technical climbing equipment and rest well, knowing tomorrow brings the biggest challenge and unforgettable moment. The summit awaits.

Day 6 - Elena Hut – Margherita Peak – Kitandara Lakes Camp

Wake before sunrise for the most demanding and rewarding day of your Rwenzori adventure. Begin the climb towards Stanley Glacier with your mountain team, using ropes, crampons, harnesses, and other technical equipment where required. Cross glacial terrain, steep rocks, and slippery sections as you climb higher. After several hours, reach Stanley Plateau and continue towards Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres. Standing on the summit of Mount Stanley is a powerful moment, with breathtaking views across the Rwenzori range. After celebrating your achievement, descend past Elena Hut and continue through Scott Elliot Pass towards Kitandara Lakes Camp for a well-earned rest.

Day 7 - Kitandara Lakes Camp – Guy Yeoman Camp

After breakfast beside the beautiful Kitandara Lakes, begin another day in the mountains. Climb the steep headwall beneath Mount Baker before continuing towards Freshfield Pass. At around 4,280 metres, pause to enjoy wide views towards the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mount Stanley. From the pass, begin the long descent through rocky valleys, boggy ground, and Afro-alpine vegetation. Pass Bujongolo Rock Shelter, a historic site connected to the Duke of Abruzzi’s 1906 Rwenzori expedition. Continue along the trail until you reach Guy Yeoman Camp. After a challenging day, enjoy dinner, rest your tired legs, and take in the mountain atmosphere.

Day 8 - Guy Yeoman Camp – Nyakalengija – Kasese

After an early breakfast, begin your final descent towards Nyakalengija. The trail passes the cliffs of Kichuchu and continues through sections that may be muddy and slippery. Descend through bamboo forest before returning towards Nyabitaba, where you can take a short rest. Continue through the montane forest, cross the Mahoma River, and make your way to the park headquarters area. Reaching Nyakalengija marks the end of your Rwenzori Central Circuit trek. Celebrate the journey, the challenges you overcame, and the memories created along the way before transferring to your lodge. A hot shower and well-earned rest await after this adventure.

Day 9 - Kasese – Entebbe

After breakfast, check out and begin your journey back to Entebbe. Leave the mountains behind and travel through Uganda’s beautiful countryside, enjoying the changing scenery as you make your way east. There will be opportunities to stop for lunch and refreshments during the journey. Arrive in Entebbe in the late afternoon or evening, where you will be dropped at your hotel or Entebbe International Airport, depending on your onward travel plans. If you are flying out today, an evening departure is recommended to allow enough time for the journey. Your Rwenzori adventure ends here, carrying memories of a remarkable mountain experience.

Fitness and Trekking Requirements

The Rwenzori Central Circuit is a demanding mountain trek, particularly the summit section. Trekkers should have good physical fitness and be prepared for long days, steep terrain, cold temperatures, mud, slippery sections, and changing mountain weather. The summit section requires technical equipment and the support of experienced mountain guides.

Margherita Peak

At 5,109 metres, Margherita Peak is the highest point of Mount Stanley. Reaching the summit requires a long and challenging day, with the final ascent involving glacial terrain and technical equipment such as ropes, crampons, and harnesses.

Mountain Conditions

The Rwenzori landscape changes dramatically as you climb, taking you through montane forest, bamboo, giant heather, bogs, Afro-alpine vegetation, rocky valleys, and glacial terrain. Weather conditions can change quickly, particularly at higher elevations.

Departure

For travellers flying out on Day 9, an evening flight is recommended because the journey from Kasese to Entebbe can take much of the day. An additional night in Entebbe can also be arranged where necessary.
